Knee Injury Riding?

Callum

I was riding my unicycle 2 days agoand didnt have my knee/shin pads on and was riding to fast and fell off straight onto my knees and wrist onto the concrete OUCH!. Itook skin off my right knee and right wrist but nothing on the left. But the left is causing me considerable pain and i cant really run or walk up steps.

What can i do apart from consulting the doctor?

Ive had ice and warm packs and it has been strapped with a bandage
no visible signs of bruising on the left side and no scratched skin, looks perfectly normal but hurts when running or walking up stairs

Answer
Simply give it time to heal, if there is any problems that exist over a long period of time you should get it checked.

You might've tore a ligament in your knee as you fell off the bike due to the suddern change in direction.

It really depends on when the pain started, if you started immediately you might've tore your ligaments in your knee.

If it the pain started appearing recently, the main reason for the pain is that you put all your weight on your left knee (Because your right knee is in pain). This is mainly joint pain.

Here are something you can do to help out your poor knee:

Range-of-motion exercises to help maintain normal joint movement and relieve stiffness.

Strengthening exercises to help keep or increase muscle strength. Keeping muscles strong with exercises such as walking up stairs, leg lifts, dips, or riding a stationary bicycle helps support and protect the knee.

Hopefully you'll get better soon! :-)

Knee Injury Urgent?!?

Spazzz

I was going on a bike ride and I was racing my sister and I crashed bad and the side I fell on my knee crashed directly into the curb and the bike fell on my upper shin. I heard a really loud pop and I immediately felt tons of pain. The thing is my dad is on a buisness trip until wednesday and my mom works night shift and won't be back until tomarrow morning. It's really swollen all around the knee and looks a little bit off. It hurts all the time and I can't even move it it just hangs limp. I've been icing it but it doesn't help- And I have SUPER HIGH PAIN TOLERANCE
I don't want to call my mom because I'm scared of what the doctor will do. I don't want to use crutches or have a bulky brace..
What EXACTLY will the doctor do at the exam?
What should I do until my mom gets home?
What possible injuries could this be?
What will happen to me? Will I have to have a brace or crutches? How long will I be out of sports?!!

Answer
Actually, I just had a very similar injury about 5 weeks ago. I fell on my knee onto concrete and ended up with a tibial plateau fracture.

Doctors usually try to be gentle, but things may hurt while they are trying to diagnose the injury. If they do anything during the examination that causes you pain, let them know! Yelling out "ow!" or "that hurts!" or whatever actually helps them. Make sure they hear you. I also have high pain tolerance, but that doesn't mean we don't feel pain. We're just good at dealing with it. Doctors need to know when we feel it.

I'm pretty sure that you can expect the doctor to touch and feel the injury site, straighten your knee, bend your knee, push against their resistance, pull against their resistance, and test the sides of your knee at a 90 degree angle by pulling your ankle and pushing your knee and visa versa. They may ask to see you walk or see you stand on it. X-rays are pretty standard to check for fractures of any kind. Depending upon the rest of the exam, there may or may not be further imaging such as MRI or CT scans.

Until your mom gets home, use RICE. Rest, ice, compression, and elevation. Rest means staying off of your knee as much as possible. Usually easier said than done though. Ice is your friend and will prevent further swelling. Make sure not to ice it more than 20 minutes for every hour though, you do not want frostbite. I know you said it doesn't seem to help, but you have nothing to loose if it doesn't make it hurt, right? Compression can be achieved by the use of an elastic bandage or wrap. Make sure it's not too tight, you do not want to cut off blood flow. To elevate the injury, it needs to be above your heart. This will reduce blood flow to the injured area just enough so that it should prevent swelling. Take some ibuprofen or other anti-inflammatory painkiller. It will help with the pain and reduce/prevent swelling as well.

This sounds like it could be any type of musculoskeletal injury. This includes sprain, strain, tendon tear/damage, ligament tear/damage, fracture, or contusion. Bone takes 6-8 weeks to heal. Contusions take 2-3 weeks to heal. Everything else is anywhere between 3 weeks and several months depending upon the severity.

What will happen to you depends upon the type and severity of injury that you have. Most likely you will be looking at some type of brace or splint or cast since it hurts to move. Crutches seem likely to me. Sports depends upon the time your type of injury takes to heal.

Best of luck and I wish you a speedy recovery! If you want more advice or information about my experience, feel free to drop me a line. I'm happy to talk.
