Me & my gf just got beach cruisers and want to know of cool places to ride em.
Answer
There is a coast bike path from Playa Del Rey(on the south) to just north of Marina Del Rey. (it inlcudes Redondo, Hermosa, Manhattan beaches)
There is also a good bike path in Santa Barbara that goes from souoth of Santa Barbara Pier all the way north to UCSB
Look into Morro Bay and Pismo Beach also

A cyclist point of view - where to live in California?

Hello, soon I'll have the chance to move to some place in California and most of my day will either be spent on the bike or at college so I'd like your advice on which is the best place to live for a cyclist, taking into account:
-A nearby velodrome is a must.
-Near one of the campus of UC
(Berkeley
Davis
Irvine
Los Angeles
Merced
Riverside
San Diego
San Francisco
Santa Barbara
Santa Cruz)
- An active road and track scene (races, rides etc)
- Cycling friendly city
Thanks for your advice!
BTW, I won't have a car so bike or public transportation is also a necessity
Answer
No doubt Santa Barbara is the best choice, however that will come with a heavy cost as its one of the most expensive cities in America.
#1 reason is quality of roads and dedicated bike paths. The next best reason is the diversity of rides you can do in the region in a single day. Brutal hill climbing, coastal TT,crit racing through the local clubs, Vast MTB accessible trails in the Los Padres wilderness. The regional areas around SB like Lompoc, Santa Maria, Pismo Beach, Hwy 1, have spectacular country roads in high dollar ranch land and winery country with little traffic. Its southern enough to be warmer than Merced, Berkley, Davis (bottom of the list), and Santa Cruz, allowing for year-round riding. LA, Riverside, Irvine, and SF are SD are overridden with cars and offer very few cycling options in the smoggy flats.
UCSB is great school and the local community of Isla Vista is something every person should experience. Santa Barbara has a multitude of quality bike shops and a huge cycling community. UCSB has the AS Bike shop for students that provides tools and assistance for bike repair, and low cost parts.
I've lived or ridden in every community on your list and I cant say enough about how much better Santa Barbara is for the cyclist. The MTD bus line has bike racks, and UC students ride free* (It use to be free, I don't know if it is anymore).
I grew up there and of course I'm biased, but as a life-long cyclist I believe Santa Barbara is one of the best places in the world from a cyclists point of view.
