Sarah

I'm 150 pounds and i bike 5 miles, i'm muscular :P anyway how many calories would i burn?
dude. i cant run 5 miles..

Answer
Honestly depends on the variables. For instance your body will burn calories at different rates over time doing the same exercise and will ultimately get more efficient to a point were you plateau. Also during the workout your body will burn more glycogen in the first 15 mins if you push then, this will make you tired but not burn so many calories proportionally to how much effort you feel you put in; infact pushing too hard here limits your working out for the next week possibly. Also calories burned is often based on an hour or so doing the same exercise.

At the gym (not factoring in hill climbing or down hill) I on average over half an hour burn 378 calories if I maintain 32kmph+ which is 16km roughly and I way 75kg. Although increasing speed to 34km can burn 405 calories.

To open a question to give a simple answer. Also 5miles is short and would be more beneficial to run it.

Burning calories on a bike?

Kim

I just bought a bike and have been for the last few days riding it in the morning for an hour for exercise around town. i would say that my speed and effort is about moderate. I read somewhere that in that hour, i burn over 500 calories. I doesn't seem like that much because I am not sweaty afterwards, am not completely exhausted, and actually enjoy it. I used to go to the gym and go on the elliptical and would burn about the same amount in the same time but be so fatigued, sweaty and unhappy afterwards. This may seem like a stupid question, but am I really burning that many calories on a bike? Please, only kind and thoughtful answers. Thanks you.

Answer
Estimate the distance you cover during your morning ride.
Then factor in your current weight.
(What you're doing is estimating your overall effort).
For light effort (<12 mph) : burn 0.226 calories/lb/mile
Moderate effort (12-14 mph) : burn 0.259 calories/lb/mile
Vigorous effort (14-16 mph) : burn 0.284 calories/lb/mile
Hard effort (16-19 mph) : burn 0.300 calories/lb/mile
"Racing" effort (20+ mph) : burn 0.363 calories/lb/mile

For example:
120 lb rider - 1 hour - 5 miles = 136 calories
120 lb rider - 1 hour - 10 miles = 271 calories
120 lb rider - 1 hour - 15 miles = 511 calories

150 lb rider - 1 hour - 5 miles = 169 calories
150 lb rider - 1 hour - 10 miles = 339 calories
150 lb rider - 1 hour - 15 miles = 639 calories

190 lb rider - 1 hour - 5 miles = 214 calories
190 lb rider - 1 hour - 10 miles = 429 calories
190 lb rider - 1 hour - 15 miles = 809 calories
