Answer
I drove around it last Fall. The 3 best sources I found were Eyewitness Travel book for Ireland, Rick Steve's book, and the nets Tripadvisor Forum for Ireland.

I'll spare you the usually stated tips on driving in Ireland & cut right to it: DO NOT PACK YOUR DRIVING DAYS with too much or distances too far. Driving there has many challenges not to be underestimated. They all drive fast, even Grandmothers, & will be on your back bumper in no time (& I drive a Shelby Mustang :) The widest the shoulders get is 6 inches, & that's luxury. Usually you'll have bushes, bicyclists, sheep, & ladies pushing baby-carriages taking up your shoulder room. My rental car had HUGE dents & scrapes on the left side, then I drove around & saw why. Don't assume the brush on your left is just brush, it may be covering a rock wall. Roads frequently travel along at 80 kph/50 mph, then all of a sudden turn 90 degrees onto a narrow bridge. On rural & city roads you'll usually have 6 inches or less to pass. Be careful, many signs are removed, turned backward (by unruly kids?), or spray painted on. Be careful, but be gutsy.

Best parts: Staying on Aran Island, eating in pub there watching Football (Soccer), their amazing hospitality (sometimes)(but paper-thin B&B walls), biking around it to Dun Aengus in early morning; taking boat to Skellig Michael & hiking up, dolphins on the way; Seeing Celtic Ireland's historic stone circles, round forts, and burial places; lots & lots of driving out in the rural areas; sleeping in a castle; trying Guinness; staying in a beachfront B&B; Glenveagh Castle in the northwest; Irish B&B breakfasts & hospitality.

Runner-up hilights: Wicklow Mts south of Dublin, Rock of Cashel in central part, Castles (but don't try to see too many, there are TONS); Downtown Cobh, near Cork, is beautiful; Beaches in the northwest county; the way the passing Irish in each county wave differently...maybe 1 finger, or 2 fingers, or the full hand...each county is distinctive, but they all tease the thickly accented northwest Donegal county folks ;) ; Northern Ireland, because it's similar to the southern part, but very different too.

Disappointing: The Irish when they're driving or staying in the B&B room next door; Ring of Kerry is hyped up with few views, but some real nice views here & there, esp toward the western tip; Very few horses at Connemara Park, but a bujillion little biting flies (poor horses); Galway's unbelievably bad traffic.

Hope you love it. It's kinda bittersweet to me. Great aspects, but seriously challenging aspects too. Just don't pack your driving days too tight...and since you're not, don't get bothered by the tailgaters.

What was the IRA car bombing in 1998 over?

Why was the IRA mad at Northern Ireland?

Answer
At anthony

Protestants predominantly Loyalist/unionist are born and bred in Northern Ireland. I as a loyalist, atheist have as much right as anyone else to determine the future of our land. Catholics predominantly republican/nationalist are free. You (as an individual) are just ignorant of the fact that the MAJORITY of people BORN AND BRED in Northern Ireland wish to remain part of the United Kingdom. If you don't like democracy you know where to go. You are also ignorant of the fact that we DON'T want to be part of England. Many of us are Ulster Scot and proud to live in Northern Ireland. We want to remain in the UK with Scotland, England and Wales. You have made the CLASSIC American error. Shame on you.
.......................................................................
The Real IRA were responsible for the Omagh bomb that killed 29 civilians. The RIRA split from the PIRA in 1997. The PIRA killed vastly more people than any organisation in the troubles. Some 1800 people died at their hands. The PIRA called a ceasefire in 1994 which they broke several times, but leading up to the Historic Good Friday Agreement in April 1998 (virtually a peace agreement) some major PIRA members broke away and formed the RIRA. The Good Friday Agreement was signed in April 1998, several months before the omagh bombing. The RIRA opposed to this agreement which lay the foundations for the Northern Ireland assembly (devolved goverment), a power sharing assembly, an agreement that lead to largely peace, several major paramilitaries on both sides eventually decommissioned and the Army left the streets, dismantling numberous large bases.

The RIRA are opposed to peace. The Omagh bombing was one way to show that armed terrorists hadn't gone away. It wasn't an isolated attacked. The RIRA had tried to bomb several places prior to the omagh bomb. There had been numerous bombs some disarmed others exploded eg in Banbridge. I recall many people were injured in banbridge that summer.

The vast majority of people in the island of ireland detest the RIRA and CIRA. These terrorist organisations have virtually no support, apart from in small areas. They have mounted several attacks in the last year. Many bomb alerts closing roads, and railway lines. Just last month one of the groups planted a bomb outside a shop and strapped another to a CHILDS BIKE. Thats the sort of scum we have to deal with. The road in Belfast was closed for 4 days.

The majority of the country wish to move into the future but a handful of deluded, cowardly scum wish northern ireland to go back to the bad old days.

The RIRA/CIRA policy is puzzling. The PIRA a vastly bigger organisation failed to bomb 1 millions unionists/loyalists from their homes. In fact it strengthed our support to remain part of the United Kingdom. Only through peaceful means will the Republic and Northern Ireland ever have a chance of joining together. But the fact remains, the Republic has little to offer us. There are some that have a romantic view of a united ireland but thats where is stops. The republic CAN'T look after itself nevermind Northern Ireland. Personally I want to be part of a country that means something in the world, a country I can be proud of (relative terms) a country that has some say in world affairs.
