Affordable Road bikes?

Lucas

Hello, I am a 15 year old interested in becoming a cyclist. I generally ride about 3 miles into town about every couple of days. I've found that my dads old Specilized bike is not that beneficial because it is slow, rusty and all round out of date. I am wondering if there are any bikes under $300 that are moderately fast and can go about 30-45 miles per week. I've found the Schwinn Tourist at target for $250 but websites have said to avoid department store bikes. Thank You.

Answer
That old Specialized might end up being a much better bike than ANY Walmart bike if you were to give it a good tuneup. The fact that it is rusty indicates that it hasn't been properly maintained. No $250 bike is going to stand up to a road cyclists training routine which would be a lot more than 3 or even 6 miles every couple of days. Give that old Specialized a good overhaul including all bearings. Have the wheels trued up and replace that rusty chain. Pump the tires to the correct pressure, you will be amazed how much of a difference it will make. A decent quality Specialized will be a better bike than any $250 Walmart bike even if it is 20 years old

Beginning road biking- What speed should I be aiming for?

Brad

I am a "pusher" so I feel I have to go about 25-26 Miles Per Hour at all time on my road bike. Needless to say, I get tired out after about 3 miles. My buddy said when I start out I should be going a lot slower. What is a good target speed for beginning road biking?

Thanks!

Answer
There is no "best target speed". There is only the best cadence. Wind direction & speed have a lot to do with it, along with hills, the road itself (bumpy vs. smooth road), etc. The more you ride, the faster your speed will become.

If you are tired after only 3 or 4 miles, how are you going to complete a 25, 50 or 75 mile race? Ride at a cadence of between 70-90 rpm on the crank, no matter what gear that might be. Proper tire inflation is also very important. An under-inflated tire can slow you down more than you might think. A tire set at 90 psi will roll slower than the same tire inflated to 100 psi.
