I'm going to Cal Poly Pomona, and I really want to ride my road bike. The area surrounding Cal Poly is not biker friendly. Where can I go to ride my road bike?

Answer
I ride out that way all of the time. It's not that the area is bicycle friendly. The roads are pretty wide in that area. I live in Orange County and take rides through there from OC all of the time. The biggest problem is that you are in a valley. You're surrounded by foothills. There are three places you could go.

1. West to San Gabriel River Trail- which is possibly the farthest of the three because it's near the 605 freeway but still a nice ride.

2. North toward San Dimas and take Foothill Blvd (aka Route 66). This one is on surface streets but there is a pretty cool bike lane and shoulder all the way in either direction.

3. Head South on the 57 Freeway to Orange County and take the Santa Ana River Trail. This one is possibly your best bet. I've seen quite a few Cal Poly Pomona students riding on this trail. It is wide, safer than the other two and heads toward the beach like the San Gabriel River Trail. The difference is that the San Gabriel River Trail ends in Sel Beach while this one ends in Huntington Beach. Santa Ana River Trail is also a nicer trail and has wider lanes. Where can I find Information on Northern Rocky Mountains Provincial Park besides the government website?

I am looking to do some backpacking and climbing in this area over the summer. I have only found random bits on certain hiking trails - namely around wokkpash lake . Does any rough guidebook or website have better details on other trails that may exist. Also, is there any climbing history there...records, guidebooks, accounts in the AAC Journal??? Any personal experiences in the region?
