I moved to Portland, Oregon a few months ago and am looking at purchasing a bike. Unfortunately, I don't really know WHAT I need. I'm a graduate student; so, I have several books/articles that I haul around, along with a laptop computer. I'm guessing fenders would be a good investment, as it's pretty rainy here ~nine months out of the year. My general commute would be ~five miles one way, with some hills. As a graduate student, and having not rode in...15 years, I'm looking for a deal. So, any suggestions on what to look for? Brands? Types of bike? etc

Many thanks,
Gage

Answer
Stay away from mountain bikes. You're looking at either a straight hybrid or performance hybrid or even a "touring road bike" if your pocket book is big enough.

You can always add fenders & a rear rack to just about any bicycle - especially one sold through a real bicycle shop. That's the whole point... Go to at least 2 or 3 bicycle shops. EXTENSIVELY test ride at least 3 or 4 bikes. Tell the salesperson EXACTLY where & how you will be riding. Tell them what you need the bicycle to do for you...not necessarily what looks cool. With the hills involved - look for a bike with a big rear cog - 32 or 34 tooth low (1st) gear.

Link below should prove to be helpful. "How to Choose a Bicycle".
