I am touring from san francisco to Los Angeles on a road bike. I need a good backpack. What do you reccomend?

Answer
Backpack? Not only no but hell no! Rear rack & panniers. If you have a lot of stuff - front pannier racks & front panniers. Want to see it done right? Click on link below.

Bicycling long distance on a mountain bike?

This is kind of a follow-up question from my last question.

I want to get my mountain bike from Tennessee over to Los Angeles. I don't want to ship it here, but rather I want to ride it the 2500 miles across the country. Can I do this on a mountain bike, or is that a ridiculous idea and I should only think of covering that sort of a distance on a road bike?

I wouldn't be in a huge hurry; I'd do it over a summer so I'd have two and a half to three months to make the trip.

Answer
Well... you could... Get slick (and slightly thinner) tires if you're planning on staying on-road.

Gearing should be ok but the riding position of a MTB is not as aerodynamic as a road bike, for obvious reasons.

You could do it, and you'd probably need most of the 2-1/2 months to do it in. 50 miles a day (average - some days you'll do double that and some days you'll be lucky to do half), 5-6 days a week... there ya go. Job done.

You'll need somewhere to stay though... it won't be cheap...
