What kind of bicycle should I get for a plus size person?

ladylj5748

My family has decided to get everyone bicycles for Christmas this year but we have multiple challenges - limited finances, various body sizes and ages, and various physical abilities. I would appreciate it if someone who actually knows could give me some guidelines as to models, etc. Based on my research I think what we are looking for are bicycles that are called Hybrids.
Here are the breakdowns:
Me- age 55 female knee surgery that has recovered well weight 250# height 5'7" basically physically strong - my bike would have to be able to pull a tot wagon (?) for a two year old child that weighs around 30 #
My one daughter - age 31 - disabled vet recovering from being in a wheel chair for almost a year - currently normal movement with some stiffness - height 5' 1" weight 170# some functional issues with left hand wrist and left foot - her bike should be able to tow a kid trailer for a child that wieghs around 30#
My second daughter - height 5'10", weight around 350# - no functional issues
Grand kid 1 - age 12 male height 52" weight 130# strong physical football player build
Grand kid 2 - age 13 male height 54" weight 130# strong physical condidtion soccer player come cognative issues from cerebral palsy
Grand kid 3 - age 10 female height 48' weight 105# strong physical condition agile/gymnastic type
Grand kid 4 - age 9 male height 18" weight 95# strong physical condition wiry build
Grand kid 5 - age 7 female height 47" weight 83# strong physical condidition asthma issues occaisionally
Grand kid 6 - age 6 female height 45" weight 81# strong physical condition
Grand kid 7 - age 5 male height 38" weight 57# strong physical condition
Grand kid 8 - age 2 female (she'll be in one of the tow vehicles)

Obviously we will be investing a chunk of dinero into these bikes for Christmas, I just don't want to either spend more than I have to nor buy junk. Since I don't know anyone who is seriously into biking that can advise me without pushing their own agenda I thought I would ask on Yahoo and see if I could get some decent advice.

I know I will probably have to go to multiple places and/or websites to meet all our needs - we live in San Diego so local advice would be better. Thank you for your help.
For all of those who think anyone with weight issues have an issue with diet and/or willpower - I challenge you to be in a wheelchair unable to bear weight or move your legs for over a year and/or try walking on knees that have no cartlidge and have been seriously injured over the past five years. Once the knee replacement happened and healed the weight is coming off. Once my daughter was able to walk again she has been consistantly dropping weight. I really don't need diet advice - I need practical suggestions to obtain the right equipment to continue the family fitness program. Thank you for your advice, I truly hope you never have to experience the pain and the frustration of the health issues we have faced (and overcome). I hope your life is blessed, pain free, and never have injuries like we experienced. By the way, the reason my one daughter was in a wheelchair was due to her service in the US Navy. Thank you for your kind wishes.

That's not going to come cheap - but you already knew that.

Now, if you want any long-term performance from these bikes (i.e. if they should last for more than a couple of years), you'll be looking at an average of well above 1000$ per bike over the range. If you're still with me now (i.e. you want and can spend 10 grand), I'd suggest:

- You can ride anything reasonable. The Surly bikes might be a good starting point.
- For your first daughter, unless I knew more about her condition, I'd dare to suggest a Kettwiesel ( http://hasebikes.com/29-1-recumbent-trike-kettwiesel-allround.html ) - a recumbent trike that won't have any problem with her weight or an impediment in one of her feet and still is (a lot of) fun to ride (more so than any upright bike). Unfortunately, that one would also eat up a large chunk of that money (and, depending on stuff like gearing and brakes, could eat up all of it). If you have the money, it would be tremendous fun to equip all of your family (down to kid #7) with Kettwiesels and/or Trets (see the same website) and occasionally couple them to a chain (only possible with this kind of trike): http://www.ebike-oberland.de/images/hase_mg_8073_460.jpg ;-)
- for your second daughter, it's going to be difficult. Go (with her, of course) to a bike store. If they act snotty, go to a different bike store. You'll want a warranty for wheels and frame that also covers plus size riders, everything else (stronger wheels, strong frame, whatever) is their problem. If it fails they're going to have to fix it.
- for the kids, regular bikes (from a bike store) should be ok. There are enough of them to pass the bikes on to the smaller kids once the larger kids have outgrown theirs, so there's no reason to go to cheap kid's bikes.

One idea, though: try to find a sympathetic (cyclist) MD who would be willing to help you trying to claim at least part of the cost for the Kettwiesel as medical expenses. The manufacture (Hase Bikes) perhaps might be able to help you, they should have enough experience. Don't know if that's possible in the US (and the US military), though, but might be worth a try.

Where should I buy a bicycle from?

Jason

I moved to the United States a couple of months ago. I currently live in El Cajon, San Diego. It's a lovely town with some big and empty streets perfect for cycling. Keeping that in mind, I'm willing to buy a bicycle. The problem is, however, I have no idea where to buy it from. I've been to Walmart and Target several times but the bicycles they have are cheaply made.

My question is: Where should I buy a bicycle from? I'm not looking for a mountain or hybrid bicycle, just an ordinary one.

So yeah, any recommendations where to go and buy it from?

Answer
