Came to Salt Lake City last month. Would like to buy a cheap bike. Don't have any previous experience. Confused about what's the difference of a mountain bike with a normal one. any recommendation for bike in the $500 range? NB. SLC (Utah) is mountainous.
Answer
Main difference is:
If you ride asphalt, you want a road bike.
If you ride unpaved trails a mountain bike.
If you ride asphalt and the occasional compacted gravel path a hybrid.
There are other minor differences:
weight: road<hybrid<mountain
potential speed: road>hybrid>mountain
long distance capacity: road>hybrid>mountain
price: road>hybrid>mountain
There are even more specific differences but for the non-experienced, this should suffice.
About 40-50% of the guys in the club use Trek. Find one in that range and you should be doing pretty good.

Anyone every visted Moab, UT?

Michael H
Going there in March. Really want to hike the Arches and maybe bike the Canyon lands. Any insights about this place?
Answer
Was there about 3 weeks ago. Gorgeous. Are you a bike rider? They're very serious about it, and have lots of stores that cater to the crowd. There is a bike path that goes from Moab to the Arches, and out to the cutoff for Canyonlands. Canyonlands would be a long ride out to the park itself.
We were RVing.
