babies seems to have some sort of stereotypical hate issue that maybe, just maybe, is resulting in a biased answer... hmmm.
In Indiana, it is forbiden to ride more than two abreast in a bike lane, except on paths and lanes set aside exclusively for bikes.
In California, state law says absolutly nothing about how bikers must conduct themselves. The city of Palo Alto, CA, says that a rider may ride in an established bike lane. It says nothing about riding 2 or more abreast.
(I choose CA because they are infamous for having many bike lanes, and Indiana because I live there)
So from this small sample, it would appear that cyclists are permitted in some states to ride in groups (as long as they stay in the bike lane). I ride my bike alot, and even though I'm allowed to ride next to someone, I wouldn't recommend it. And if bikers are riding in a group outside of the bike lane, they are waving any special privilages that come with biking in the bike lane. So they better watch out!!
Also, haven't you ever seen two motorcyclists riding in the same traffic lane (in reference to your last sentence). Motor vehicles are permitted to rid two abreast in a lane if they can safely drive, so why shouldn't bikes? (But like I said, I wouldn't do it)

Where should I move to near Sunnyvale?

I just arrived in the area and wanted to find a decent place to rent a house. Any suggestions?

We were lucky to find a place in Palo Alto. Great neighborhoods, lots of places to walk, bike paths galore. I'm a big fan of the area. Also, there's a Fry's in PA if you're so inclined. Extra bonus: Foothills Park in Palo Alto is only open to PA residents and is a beautiful park, from what I hear.
