what are the health benefits (physical) of riding a bicycle?

me and friend have been riding bikes and we want to know if our legs will get shaped and how long till.

Answer
Bicycling is a very good form of cardio workout and provides all of the benefits that entails including helping you control your weight, reducing your risk of heart disease, diabetes and hypertension, improving your circulation, etc. It's also good for people who are in poor condition, since you can easily gauge the severity of your workout to your fitness level. If you're in bad shape, take it easy at first and work your way up to better conditioning slowly. In this respect it's very different from running which is much harder even at a minimal level.

Knee problems are typically caused by improper bike fit or pushing big gears. Your leg should be almost but not quite straight when you are at the bottom of your down stroke while seated. A lot of beginners/novices tend to want the seat too low and have knee problems as a result. You should use a gear that's low enough that you can spin the crank at least 70-80 rpm's; more would be better. Big gears can put a lot of stress on the knee.

Some people are talking about health problems related to saddles. The key thing there is to make sure that the pressure when you sit is entirely on your sit bones and not on the soft tissue in between. If you have any pressure there, then you need a wider saddle. Gel seats, gel pads and gel shorts all make this problem worse by distributing pressure over a larger area, including the soft tissue -- which is bad. It can cause not only low sperm counts but in more severe cases impotence or sterility -- not to mention quite a bit of pain. BTW, this fit issue causes different but still annoying health problems for women. Everyone benefits from a saddle that fits their anatomy properly.

what are the benefits of riding a bike regularly.ive not rode a bike for years. ive checked on the net for cheap bikes for sale. will riding a bike make my butt and legs firmer? and less flabby and jiggly? will it also help my abs area?

thanks!

Answer
It depends upon how much you ride. If you ride a lot, then yes, it will make your butt and legs much firmer. Like any extensive cardio, it will burn fat, even off of your abs but most people need to supplement exercise with a good diet to get rid of flabby abs.

You'll be in generally better health than if you don't get regular exercise, even if you don't lose all that much weight. Exercise is good for you. It improves your circulation. It improves your respiratory system. It makes you less likely to develop diabetes, hypertension and heart disease.

Many people who bicycle commute find that they have a lot less road rage than they did while driving. The only time I get road rage on my bike is when someone harasses me for being in the road, which is not really all that often -- though still more often than I'd like.

Bicycle commuters also save a lot money on car maintenance and fuel, which is going up rapidly lately.

There are also benefits to society. Healthy people reduce overall health insurance costs. Bicyclists take up less space on the road and are usually completely out of the way of cars which reduces traffic congestion and improves fuel economy for people still in cars. This also reduces the need to expand roads, which saves us all tax money. It reduces the demand for oil, which helps keep oil prices down. It helps reduce the dependence upon foreign oil, which is good for the country. It even helps keep the air a bit cleaner.
