So...Hybrid bikes with front suspensions bad?

cj.

So I posted a question looking for a good hybrid bike with front suspensions as some of you may have seen it. I got some responses saying ditch the front suspenions cause it adds weight and makes you slower.

Since it's a pain to ask questions through "add more detail" on yahoo I'am asking on this post.

How much slower will the front suspensions make you? I like the Giant Roam 3 and the Giant Escape City ( no front suspension) But I'am worried if I get the Escape City one It may feel too bumpy or I will mess the tire up cause I have been using my Crappy Diamondback Sorrento to get around town.
So I'am worried that my style of carelessly riding off curbs and going over the cracks on the green belt will mess up the tires of a suspension less hybrid.....Am I better off with the suspensions or can bikes like the Escape take a fair beating?

Answer
Suspension on a hybrid will not protect the wheels and tires of a hybrid if you jump off curbs. Keep in mind as well the suspension forks used on hybrids have far less travel than the forks generally used on mountain bikes. A suspension fork adds weight and cost to any bike, so be prepared to pay more money for a heavier bike, all other things being equal, if you opt for suspension. A heavier bike will make you slower. As well, suspension eats some of your pedaling energy, slowing you further. There are no precise measurements for how much slower you will go. Weight affects you more on uphills, and suspension slows you most when you are pedaling hard. A hybrid is no mountain bike, if you buy one you will not be able to ride it the same way you would ride on fat tires.

which hybrid bikes are comparable to Trek 7.3 FX?

Nadia

I'm looking to buy a hybrid bike, and have read very positive reviews of the Trek FX series. I think 7.3 is right at my budget limit.
I would like to do the due diligence and find out which bikes compare, outside of the Trek FX series. e.g., DiamondBack, Canondale, Raleigh, GT make hybrid bikes that are in a similar price range. What hybrid bikes compare to Trek 7.3, and how do they compare in durability of components and weight?

Answer
The FX series is a fitness bike, a hybrid without shocks and a more aggressive riding position.

Bikes like the FX.

The best thing to do is find the model in you price range and go for a test ride. The component level and the weights are going to be very close in the same price range. All of the manufactures will have a model close to these.
