Do you think a hybrid bike is a scam?

Everywhere I read about hybrid makes it sound like a cheap mountain bike with thinner wheels and none knobby tires why not convert the mountain bike most of us already have

The weight primarily.... But, the gearing for a hybrid is far more efficient on the road. A man bike is measurably slower than a road bike on the road..... A hybrid is a very valid and functional ride!

What is the most value for a hybrid bike?

I'm in the market for a new bike. I do a lot of paved roads. I initially was going for a road bike, but I like the versatility/comfort of the hybrid bikes when I test drove a men's 2013 Schwinn Sporterra bike.

I'm unsure of what to get in terms of getting more bang for my buck. I'm looking to spend below $500 USD for it.

I am considering the Diamondback, Schwinn Sporterra Sport, and I'm not sure what else there is in terms of good quality hybrid bikes. Any advice?

Go the the local bike shops you want one that doesn't have shocks they just add weight and soak up energy.
