I have been looking at bikesdirect.com, the 3 or so road bikes that they offer in the 300 to 400 price range. Can anyone recommend another bike or website? What is the difference between a bikesdirect bike and a walmart road bike like the gmc denali, or a schewin? There are a lot of features on http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/gravity/avenue_b.htm and http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/gravity/avenue_c.htm that seem to be the same which is really confusing. Was is one almost 100 dollars more? Any help is appreciated.
One more question I have is just a comparison between the Gravity's above and this Windsor:
http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/windsor/wellington1_IX.htm
It's a little more than the Gravity B. It doesn't say whether it has double-walled rims however... Additional thoughts?

Run...do not walk...run away from any bike from a discount store. Let's compare... Every single discount store bike I know of uses a rear freewheel hub vs. a cassette hub. The cassette set up is much better. Every single discount store bike uses single walled rims. Double walled rims are stronger & better. Both bikes you've listed from Bikes Direct have both a cassette hub & double walled rims. A few of the components on the Gravity Avenue C seem to be slightly better than on the Avenue B. Other than that, they are about equal. For a beginning road bike both would be vastly better than anything from Wal-Mart. Also, the Bikes Direct bikes come in different frame sizes. Wal-Mart bikes do not. Know what you are looking for in advance. Be sure to order one that's right for your height. I would suggest going to a real bike shop first & have them suggest what size is correct for you.
I've also stated this many times here... The owner of my LBS (local bike shop) loves discount store bikes. They break down so often & then he makes lots of $$$ repairing them.

I have a bit of a different answer compared to my colleagues.
http://performancebike.com has some wheels on sale- the Forte Apollo wheelset- for under $300. Rotating mass is your enemy and reducing your wheel weight will provide better performance improvement than any other fix other than getting a new bike.
With the change from the $300 get some clipless pedals and shoes if you can.
