Good Mountain/Hybrid bike for under £300?

I am looking for a good quality mountain/hybrid bike for under £300. I will be using it to ride to and from work everyday so I would want light bike, I would get a road bike but I also occasionally visit small trails, so can anyone suggest which bike I should get?
I would prefer a hard tail for added comfort too
@Needs Adjustment: Yes my company is part of the government bike scheme but I have just started as an apprentice and I'm on 2 month probation, meaning I don't get any long term benefits like a pension scheme and bike scheme etc. I could wait but then I wouldn't be able to get to work

300£ is not enough for a good bike, especially for mountain bike. For this money it is better that you buy a hybrid bike because you will get better components. If you're looking for lightweight bike I recommend you a hybrid bike with v-brakes because they are lighter than mountain bikes and also have a thinner and 2" larger wheels than mountain bikes, which means that you will be faster and easier pedaling.
