Affordable and decent mountain bike?

I don't really know what brand of bike i should buy. I know i want a mountain bike but honestly didn't realize there were different tire sizes, not too much of an avid biker. Basically what would be the best brand and tire size for a 5'10 male 220lbs?

Answer
Forget brand name - at least those from bike shops. They will ALL use basically similar & sometimes the EXACT same components within the same price range. If one brand was that much better than the rest - they would have an unfair advantage. There's a multitude of great brands. Raleigh, Fuji, Jamis, Trek, Giant, Cannondale, etc., etc. The "best" bicycle is the one that fits you the best & fits "where & how" you will be riding. Most people that think they need a mountain bike actually do NOT need one. Going to be off-road all the time? If so - get a mountain bike. If not, get something else - like a hybrid or possibly a "dual sport bike" for both on & off-road.

Avoid discount & big box stores like the plague. Go see your authorized, independent, knowledgeable, friendly, local BICYCLE shop. Test ride a few. It's FREE. Also read what's on these two links...

Bike shops have professional sales people to help you choose the best bike for your needs. Discount stores have minimum wage "associates". Your choice.

Can anyone give me a quick buyer's guide for bike wheels?

Ive got a specialized tricross bike, and jus had the front wheel stolen. Went to halfords, who no fing surprise didnt have any (road) bike wheels, why would they being a bike shop? Anyway, am trying to find one online, but have realised apart from knowing I need round ones, Im not sure what else I need to think about when buying a wheel so any advie would be great, cheers.

P.s. Most importantly, I think I need 700c wheels, so will any 700c wheels fit? Or e.g. are the hubs different or something?

Answer
Consult these 5 simple words... "See your local bike shop." Halfords is NOT a bicycle shop. They are a discount store!!! Find a Specialized dealer.
