hybrid bikes petite women image

I'm 5'0" and I find that a lot of bike stores discriminate against people of my stature.. why is that? I know that they can do fittings but still. Thanks!
Also might as well ask anyways :P what is the purpose of a road bike? Is it beneficial to buy that or buy a hybrid if my only purpose is to commute to and from work as well as do some riding for fitness all around the city?
Answer
Cheap bikes come in a size (or sometimes three: S, M, L fits all) but decent manufacturers will have them in 1 or 2 cm increments. Even if a shop doesn't stock all the sizes, they should be able to find one from the brokers.
If your commute is 4 or 5 miles a hybrid should suffice but if you commute 8 or more miles you should go with a road bike, much faster and less effort to get to work. The same thing if you are happy riding at 10-12 mph = hybrid, if you want to ride 15 mph and up = road bike. A hybrid may also be 50% heavier than a road bike, think about it if you need to take the bike upstairs.
Fitness riding requires many hundreds of miles a year. Close to one hour a day if you are approaching 40 years of age. A road bike will give you more riding satisfaction.

I am 5'3 and I find that most things are mean't for women at least 2-3 inches taller than me. It's a pain up the bum. Maybe you could get a BMX. They are smaller than other bikes.
