I'm looking for a light bike around 200-300 dollars that's good for causal road riding

Answer
Start looking at hybrids from real bicycle shops - not discount stores or big box stores. You'll need to up your price to about $350 to $500.

The best of the bunch linked below is by far the Raleigh because of the 8 speed rear cassette & double wall rims. And priced at $460 - $470, same as the others.

I need advice for purchasing an entry-level road bike?

Hey. I am looking into buying an entry-level road bike. I am really not looking at racing and things, but I am interested in longer bike rides around the states and different countries for fun, so I'm not out to buying a 1500 bike just to cut 30 seconds off my racing time, because I'm not racing at all ;)

My price range is about 300-500 dollars, and I know that 300 dollars won't cut it for any road bike. Haha. They are more expensive than mountain and hybrid bikes, for sure!
I guess that I have changed my price range from 400-700 dollars. I heard that the trek 1000 is a great entry level bike, what do you think?
Hey, Carl_the_Truth, at my local bike shop I could probably get the trek cheapter than 700 dollars, most people online say for about 500-600 dollars?

Answer
Another thing to think about when buying a bike is the shop you purchase the bike from. Try to buy your bike from a shop that offers lifetime adjustments on the bike, that way you don't have to get it tuned up every time the gears go out of whack. This can save you hundreds over the years, considering a tune up is usually $80 a pop. I bought my mountain bike at a shop that doesn't offer free adjustments, and I'm kicking myself because that's a lot of money for me. I bought my road bike at Performance Bike shop, and I know I can get the gears and brakes done whenever I want.

Also, I've never ridden a Trek 1000, but I'm sure they are great bikes. I bought a Schwinn Fastback 24, which has the same parts package as the Trek 100, with a cycling computer for $550 on sale. Look for sales and then compare the parts on other bikes to the 1000. Most often you can get a great bike for less if you look around.

Also, check out bicycling magazine's editor's choice awards. They cite the Trek 1000 as the best entry level bike available, but also mention other bikes (including my schwinn) that are close to the 1000 in performance and you will more likely find those bikes on sale somewhere. Good luck!
