Which Toyota is best?

I am beginning the search for a new vehicle. I'm leaning towards a Toyota because they tend to have a higher resale value than most other vehicles and they carry a good reputation of lasting quality. But, I am confused on where to begin my search. I've been looking into the Toyota Prius, but am skeptical about the durability of a hybrid and how expensive maintenance could be. I'm married with no children and am just getting out of college and moving towards a big city to look for work, so I'm not interested in vans or pick-up trucks or large SUVs. I am curious as to what your experiences with any Toyota vehicle have been and if there's a certain type you would recommend. Thank you:)

It's tough to say which Toyota would be the best match for you, but since you mention the Prius...

The hybrid high maintenance need is a myth. They actually require less maintenance than a conventional auto. The 2013 Prius C was rated the lowest-cost car to own and operate by Consumer Reports this year. Prii don't even have many of the components on conventional cars that need service, such as an automatic transmission, starter motor, alternator or power steering pump. The wheel brakes last a very long time (250,000+ miles) because the regenerative braking system does most of the work. The gasoline engine has a timing chain with no replacement interval. The hybrid battery packs have been lasting longer than anticipated--usually 350,000-400,000+ miles. I barely spend $20/year on maintenance for my 2007 (I do the work myself, at home, but it doesn't need much). If you have the service department complete all the suggested maintenance items, you'll spend more, but many of the items are easy to complete at home, and some can be postponed.

The Prius really is an amazing product. With a little hyper-miling practice, 60+ mpg is possible. They produce just a fraction of the exhaust emissions of a conventional auto. The liftback design is very versatile--it can fit larger things inside than nearly any sedan. I've used it to carry 3 bikes, our two dogs, a drum set, bagged gravel, 700 lbs of laminate flooring, amps and musical instruments... It has plenty of legroom, the features are hard to beat, and the driving experience is really nice.

The smaller Prius C isn't rated as highly as the larger, Prius III but it's a lower-cost entry. The criticisms of the C focus on the interior design and ride comfort, where the larger Prius III takes the higher marks. The Prius V is a great option in the wagon category--it has the most interior space of the Prius variants.

I wish I could recommend the Yaris but the ratings have been disappointing for ride quality, driving dynamics and interior design. The Corolla, Camry and Matrix are highly-rated.
