Okay, no smartazz comments about the Garden State... my new bride and I need something to do other than copulate for the 4 day 4th of July weekend... We're very new to the area and we need ideas as where we can go? We're on a budget so New York is out of the question, and we've already done that anyway... Philly is something we do every weekend anyway... so...Cape May? Ocean City? Poconos? Where do we see fireworks in Philly?

Answer
OK....fireworks. Off of Route 168 (Black Horse Pike) near exit 3 of the NJ Turnpike, there is a Holiday Inn. Head that way, and turn off of 168 at the Wawa and drive towards the hotel. On your right, there's a 6 or 7 story hill...we used to call it Suicide Hill when we sled on it. I think they fenced off the top of it, but you can still climb up it and find yourself a spot to see the fieworks in Phillly...the Art Museum, the River and ones from the sports complex. You could also go the "easy" route and try to find a spot on Penn's Landing, but good luck finding a spot where you can see the fireworks without bumping into the dregs of society. You could also hit the Art Museum and go behind it, on the Kelly Drive side and look for the Water Works...it's usually a little calmer back there. I can't remember where the fireworks are being shot off from though, the museum or the river....maybe both though. Hit Philly2nite.com or something to find out. As for seeing them, unless you have a river view hotel room or have a friend with a roof deck, you're going to be stuck in a large crowd of people trying to see the fireworks...don't look for any romance there.

On the White Horse Pike in Somerdale is an italian restaraunt called Peppino's. You can't beat their food at all, and it's this little tiny place. It'd be a nice spot to go and be alone for a bit. Call em up for directions. The owners are the original ones and still even have their thick italian accents. The Chop House in Gibbsboro is very good too, but more $$$ than other places. Maybe you can even call the Chart House for the 4th. If the fireworks are on the river, you call now, are a good talker and drop the fact that you're a newlywed, just maybe they'll be nice and give you a spot close to the window. Good food in there too. It's right off of Delaware Ave.

Cape May is nice and shouldn't be too "resort-y" crowded like the rest of the beaches. Plus, you can take the Ferry down to Lewes, DE...I think it's only like a 90 minute trip and it's not very expensive at all. If you like to ride bikes, there is a 7 mile bike path that will take you to the beach from the ferry, although there are many more spots to stop off and get to the beach quicker. A lot of the paths look to be through the woods and some farms, not like along major roads or anything like that. You can drive onto the ferry too, and hit the DE beaches. Rehoboth is a beautiful little beach town and they have a boardwalk. The beaches are nice too. There are a lot of spots in Cape May too to run off into the brush and be alone to watch the sunset over the bay.

Ocean City can be fun but it's a very family resort type of town and it's bone dry. No bars and no liquor stores in the town...maybe something to consider. You should be able to get a house on short notice in Sea Isle, but it's a lot of the wife-beater, fake tan meathead type of crowd on the weekend. It's more of a frat party down there than a resort town.

Hmmm....Camping in the Pineys? Maybe LBI or a beach up that way?

Maybe...if you're up for the drive (like 2 or 3 hours) you could hit the Delaware River Water Gap. It's not like the Delaware River we know down here. It's beautiful up there and there are a lot of campsites and canoeing outfits. You really can't beat some of the veiws cruising down that river throught the valleys, but I'll bet the water is still pretty cold. There's a million spots to stop off, including some smaller islands that most people just float past. Bring a blanket, some lunch and a bottle of something and you could spend hours there.

Well, good luck finding something and congratulations!

What is the best east coast beach for a small family vacation?

michelle

I live near DC and I'm planning a small family get-a-way for this June. We want to go to a beach that is CLEAN and that has plenty to do. We love going in the water, so a place that doesn't have too rough of waves and that doesn't have a lot of rocks. I have never been to any of these beaches but have heard they are good choices. Please tell me which beach is best and why.

Rehoboth, DE
Wildwood, NJ
Atlantic City, NJ
Ocean City, MD
Virginia Beach, VA
Sorry, I left out that I want a beach within a 4 hour drive from DC.

Answer
Definitely Wildwood, New Jersey. The beach is big and clean, and has LOTS of attractions along the boardwalk, and has several piers with rides. There are also lots of restaurant, and cool retro hotels. Theres also bike rentals for the boardwalk and such, also lots of mini golf. The water is very calm and there are no big rocks. The water is also very warm. If you stay in a hotel or motel, there will also most likely be a pool for you guys. It's also right near Atlantic City, if you want to make a day trip there while in Wildwood.

As far as I know, Rehoboth and Ocean City Maryland have rough waves that pound right into the sand, but I'm not too sure about Virginia Beach.
