hybrid bikes specialized vita image

Emily
Hey, so, I'm kind of a novice biker and know nothing about 'special' bikes and bike terminology. I'm very interested in buying a $300 used Specialized Vita hybrid, and today the seller told me she has clip in pedals on it (which I could see, but at the time brushed aside). I'm now left with a slew of questions. First, can you take clip in pedals off and replace them with normal ones? Second, do all clip in shoes work with all clip in pedals? (Do I need to buy special shoes?) and lastly, what is the point of clip in pedals?? Should I keep them on or switch them out? Thanks!
Answer
You can replace them with platform ( regular ) pedals or toe clips ( the cage ). If you want to use the clipless pedals you will need special shoes that the cleats bolt to. You want to get the clips that match the pedals they are not interchangeable. Ask the seller if she still has the other pedals.

I need suggestions for a very good used hybrid bike for ~$600.?

Hey all,
I plan to purchase a used hybrid bike and my budget is around $600. I don't know very much about bicycles so I thought I'd reach out to the community. Any suggestion for a very good, lightweight hybrid bicycle for around $600. Is this a good price range, or should I up my budget?
Answer
If you have $600 to spend, I highly recommend you spend it on a new bike. Hybrids are not that expensive and by purchasing a new bike you will get one that fits you and a mightly fine bike. I too prefer no shocks on a hybrid. I ride mine on gravel bike paths and the road for commuting. Please visit a few local bike shops, talk with the sales person about the type of riding you are planning on doing and then test ride your options. Selecting the bike shop is not just about the bike, it is also about customer service. There is nothing quite like a new bike to bring a smile. The Giant Cypress has been a popular hybrid in my family. I just purchased a Specialized Vita Elite for $900 which is a women's bike. The Vita Sport was I believe $600 and they have an entry model for $400. i am sure they have a comparable model for men. I believe the Cypress all cost around $400. I am not sure that bike is still in the Giant line.
Best of luck and happy shopping.
