hybrid bikes under 400 image

Danny H
I'm aware that a bike in this price range isn't a top end bike but I'd like to make a somewhat informed choice being completly ignorant of how to differentiate between them. What advice can you give me?
I'd like to buy a road bike or hybrid and would consider buying used. If I buy used, additionally what advice would you give to ensure I don't buy a stolen bicycle?
Thanks in advance,
Daniel

Used would be the way to get the best value. Also check out the police auctions in your area (I just missed the last one around here durnit).
New bikes can be had for 300, but you'll get a much better bike if you can stretch your budget to 400. Visit several bike shops during the week to get the best service (weekends are usually either too busy or the best salesmen have the days off) and see whats out there. By visiting several, you can get a better feel for which shop has your best interests in mind. I have 4 bike shops within about 30 miles of me, and two of them are A+ and the other two are run by pure crooks, so trust your instincts. If you feel pressured, thank them and leave. Do not buy on your first visit ; a bike is a long term deal so you need to buy one that you are gonna like or you wont ride it. The usual procedure to test ride a bike is to give them your I.D. , so dont be scared away by that request on their part....ride several and soon one will usually stand out as the one for you...

What would be a good commuter bike for under $200-300?

Good Vibes
I just need a reliable, comfortable, well built built bicycle to get me to work which is 3.9 miles away from my house.
Stylish too.

Don't want much for $300 do ya? It's a fine line between a $400 bicycle and a $300 one. Ones at or under $300 usually have a 7 speed rear "freewheel" & single wall rims. Ones at $400 and above will usually have an 8 speed rear "cassette" and Shimano "freehub". Plus double-walled rims. Much stronger & longer lasting.
If (and only if) you can assemble a bicycle - see link below from Bikes Direct. These are their hybrids & performance hybrids. An outright (good) road bike would be much more. If it were me - I'd spend the extra $100 for the better bike. See additional links please.
