To be honest, I don't even know what an electric car motor would look like... I imagine something like the Stanley Cup, turned sideways - weighing about 80 pounds.

Depending on your definition of "car"
You can get motor of a few hundred watts for a small car (bicycle sized) from a few hundred dollars including controller. To a drive system similar to the one in the Tesla for around $32000. (three phase ac induction see metric mind below)
The battery can vary from about a hundred dollars for a small short range lead acid, to many thousands for a 1000 lb Lithium Manganese long range high performance number.
Other hardware a gearbox, steering, chassis, body work etc.

If its one that you peddle along with the electric power witch is what I drive in phila. and never had a problem when asked bye the cops. Cause its assisted power.
