I'm looking to buy a road bike that is good for a beginner, and someone who bikes to work, and let's try to keep the price under $1000 if possible, but not required.

Thanks

For less than $1000, you should be able to find some decent aluminum or steel road bike for road cycling and commuting, this price range you can even find ones with the frame partially in carbon as well when they're on sale.

Since this is your first road bike, I would suggest you go to your local bike shop, take your time and ask a lot of questions. When you talk to the shop salespeople or the mechanics, you will gain a lot more knowledge than hanging out here in Y!A all day. Only once you feel knowledgeable enough, then you can look into craigslist postings and be able to tell which bikes are good, and which ones are not worthwhile to get. A lot of the craigslist postings are over priced, you'll definitely have to haggle, but you need enough knowledge firsthand.

Or, take the easy way, and buy a new one at a local shop. Not only they will guarantee the bike fits you, usually basic maintenance is included and will take care of any warranty issues.

Right now, since sales overall is slow this year due to the economy, expect some really good tent sales in springtime as they are clearing out last year's models.

Starting to cycle to reduce stress on knees and ankles but have a few questions?

Get a good used bike off of Craig's list, Ebay, classifieds , or garaga sales. Try rto saty with Trek, Specialized, Cannondale, or Giant.... BUT KNOW THE SIZE FRAME YOU NEED!

More importantly. to exercise with out the stress on knees and koints you need how to prosperly pedal. To do that you need to learn how to 'spin' the pedals. If you do not know use this forum to get the info. Do Not 'mash' the pedals, ie pedaling at too slow of a speed with too mush pressure. 'Spinning' is the proper way top ride a bike. Mashing will cause you almost as much stress and strain as running!
