A long distance trip from Dayton, Ohio through to California.

Answer
No, but I sure fantasized about it when I was 14. I grew up in Dayton, and my girlfriend moved back to California and I was plotting routes on the map to see if I could ride there. LOL.

I know this doesn't help you worth a flip, sorry. :o)

I can tell you that once you enter the plains states, the wind increases dramatically (from the south and west, in most places), and it's a long gradual climb for hundreds of miles as the land rises to the continental divide, so be prepared to work pretty hard for awhile. It also gets very dry and you'll need to prepare for that if you find a route and make the trip....the sections through Texas, Kansas, New Mexico, eastern Colorado, and of course all of Arizona, Utah, and Nevada can be pretty barren and scorching compared to what you're used to back in the emerald east. It's very beautiful, though (well, much of the time, anyway).

I'd get with the League of American Bicyclists, League of American Wheelmen, and maybe see if you can get in touch with someone involved in the RAAM event....maybe they can help or point you in a good direction.

Good luck! And if you stop into a K&G bike shop, tell Doug or Stan that Chris from Oklahoma says hi. :o)

Is there a lot to do for a college student in San Diego?

I'm a transfer student who is torn between going to SDSU and CSULB in Long Beach. I want to go to college in an area where there are a lot of recreational activities and I won't get bored. What is there to do in the surrounding area around the SDSU campus?

Answer
San Diego is one of the nicest cities in the country. It's a major tourist destination and there are tons of things to do. With 70 miles of beautiful beaches, countless parks and gardens, major league and college sports, dozens of golf courses, world class museums, Tony Award winning theater, great cuisine, best weather in the country, high tech industry, major universities, and the best zoo in the world, it's my choice as THE place to live and play in the USA.

The Trolley stops at the campus of SDSU so that gives you the ability to get to all the popular attractions the city has to offer. The stadium is one stop away and is where the Aztecs and Chargers play football. There are also two major shopping malls along the trolley route in Mission Valley. There you'll find plenty of shopping, restaurants, and movie theaters. It also takes you downtown to the Gaslamp Quarter, Seaport Village, and Petco Park.

Mission and Pacific Beach are your best bet for fun in the sun. Belmont Park has a vintage wooden roller coaster (one of two remaining seaside coasters on the west coast) as well as other rides. There is a strand (boardwalk) that runs the entire 3 mile length of both beaches. It's a great place to walk, run, sun, bike or skate. Mission Bay Park has lost of trails and bike paths and it's also where the SDSU rowing team competes.

Some must see attractions are the world famous Zoo, Sea World, and Balboa Park. Known as the "Smithsonian of the West" Balboa Park is the largest urban cultural park in the country. You can get a park passport which allows you entry to a dozen museums as well as the zoo. County residents get free admission to the major museum on the first Tuesday of each month.

Other attractions in the park are the Air and Space Museum, Ruben H. Fleet Science Center and IMAX theater, the Natural History Museum, the Museum of Man, the Automotive Museum, the Old Globe Theatre, the Hall of Champions, the Botanical Gardens, and the largest outdoor pipe organ in the world (free concerts on Sunday).

La Jolla offers great views, great surfing, great food, great theater, and great shopping.
Check out the surfers at historic Windansea Beach. At low tide you can walk out onto the tide pools. Walk along the Cove and check out the caves. Visit the Museum of Contemporary Art. Take a stroll on Prospect St and check out the shops, galleries, and have some authentic Mexican food at Alfonso's. Then head to the Birch Aquarium at The Scripps Institution of Oceanography. It has a spectacular view of the bluffs over the Pacific Ocean. The Tony award winning La Jolla Playhouse is located nearby on the campus of UCSD. For a few laughs at night, The Comedy Store is on Pearl St.

For nightlife, the Gaslamp Quarter offers dining, drinking and dancing. It's also the home of Petco Park and the San Diego Padres major league baseball team.
