Is riding your bike a good substitute for running?

I've been running 6-7 miles a day, at least 6 days a week for the past 2 and a half years, and have went from being 180 lbs to 125 lbs,but I have to take a break for a little while because of the nonstop pain it's been causing in my left knee. I started biking instead, and I go a little over 9 miles, and over half of it is uphill. I feel like I'm still getting a very intense cardio workout because I sweat like crazy, new muscles are sore, and I keep my heart rate up the whole time, but I was wondering if going from running to biking was a downgrade? I just want to make sure I'm still burning a good amount of calories, and getting an appropriate amount of exercise to help me at least maintain, or lose weight while I'm unable to run. :)

I don't believe riding replaces running but it works hand in hand with the benefits of running. Riding a bike is a lower impact workout, something your joints will appreciate over time, if not immediately. A high rate of pedaling burns more calories over a slow rate of pedaling. A more difficult gear will build muscle over time. In either case the rider's pulmonary system will improve alongside muscle conditioning and tone. You will know this to be true when your legs don't "burn" as often. This burning feeling is a build up of lactic acid, alongside a tired feeling in a given muscle grouping. Finally, its best to get a bike best suited for you. The type of bike and the routine once established is an upgrade or downgrade depending on the bike matching the rider. I hope this helps. Get well soon.

Best.

Does riding a bike make your legs feel better after 3 days straight of rigorous running?

Ok so I have been running 3 days straight on this paved trail thats 6 miles long and its a 1.5 mile walk to it which means 3 miles there and back, I run usualy 4.5 - 5 miles and walk the rest and my legs are in excruciating pain but I don't want to just do nothing today so if I rode my bike today would it help ease the pain and still give me a good cardio workout while resting my legs so I can start running again? Thanks

Answer
Take an easy ride on the bike, don't do any strenuous workouts. Your muscles need time to recover or you'll make no progress. A break from the constant pounding from the trail and your feet will thank you. Training every day with out recovery is the quickest way to slow your development, an easy bike ride will get your legs moving and the blood flowing.

Note: muscle soreness is not from latic acid build up, latic acid is flushed from your system 30~40 min. after strenuous exercise is stopped. the soreness is from micro-tears in your muscles and these tears need time to repair.
