I think I might do more road riding, but I would like to have the option to go off road if I need too... Can you do a little off road riding w/ a road bike?....Does it work good?....And what do you thing is the a "best bang for your buck(hybird)" bike is?......

Answer
Hybrid bikes are the best 'all-round' type bike. If the off-road riding you do is just gravel or dirt trails in parks, a hybrid bike is just fine and special tires or suspension are unnecessary and just add weight.

Get one with an adjustable stem which lets you change the riding position. You want to get as low as you can while still feeling comfortable and safe in traffic. Giant brand bikes have won several Consumer Reports recommendations and have this kind of stem.

Also, be sure to have the bike shop fit you carefully for the frame size and have them raise the seat enough to protect your knees. Most people ride with their seats too low.

what discipline in cycling should I race in with a hybrid bike?

I have a specialized crosstrail and am looking to take cycling seriously what discipline of races should i take part in?

Answer
Hybrid bikes are recreational bikes for around town, they aren't meant for racing. The geometry is wrong for road racing and the frame, gearing, and components are not suitable for single track where MTB racing is done.

If you're going to cycle seriously, save about $1000 for a decent entry level bike for the kind of racing you are interested in doing. You need the bike, pedals and shoes, bike computer, and a heart rate monitor and left over money for race licences and entry fees, so $1000 is a good starting budget for getting into racing.
