why is the minimum time for walking 30 minutes and
60 min is the min for biking? i live in miami and it's dangerous to bike on the streets. i want to add cycling to my work out and do not want to have to drive somewhere to bike, just wanna bike in my neighborhood. what do you suggest is a good amount of time to spend on the bike to get benefits of cycling. we have no incline here for the most part, pretty flat city. Please advise and thanks in advance
Answer
There really is no minimum time for either. Both give you great benefits--and you don't need to worry about any time minimums. However, the more you do them, the more benefit you will get.
You can switch them up so maximize the different body parts that you want to work. And, adding hills will decrease the amount of time that you need to get the same benefit as if you were walking or biking on flat surfaces. But, if you don't have hills, just walk stairs instead.
If you are unable to bike outdoors, you can get a trainer for your bicycle so you can ride longer inside.

Jogging vs Bike Riding?

Which is better for losing weight? I feel like with bike riding, although it does feel more strenuous, it is just sitting on your butt and moving your legs... so it wouldn't work out the hips or butt area. Am I horribly misinformed?
Answer
Jogging uses more muscle groups, thus expending more energy. Biking uses less muscle groups, but allows you to sustain the exercises longer, thus expending more energy. Confused? If you want to use both exercises you will be mixing up your routine and not getting so bored. Ultimately, you want to perform either biking or jogging at a low intensity (don't go all out). It is all about the time you perfom the activities (the longer the better). The lower the intensity, the more your body will burn the fat for energy (it takes longer to break down). A quicker workout requires quick energy (carbohydrates). Also, the more energy expenditure = weight loss (just limit caloric intake).
If I had to choose either or, I would say low intensity jogging before you have a meal. Sustain at least 15 minutes. If you have to walk pump your arms as well to increase energy expenditure. Good luck!!!
