Biking advice?

Tony

So I live in Brooklyn NYC, and I would like to receive biking advice. I'm thirteen( turning 14 very soon) and I only have one biking path to choose, since the area i live is not upper Brooklyn. Anyways, I'm not an experienced biker, and I would like to ask a few questions.
- What should I carry When I bike? I don't have a bottle holder on my bike, but i would usually carry ; a bike lock, my wallet, and phone in my pockets.
- How safe is it to ride on the streets? What are some tips when riding in the streets? When i was a kid, I would usually ride on the side ways, but now things have changed. I'm not comfortable with a 2 way street, so I usually just ride my bike on a 1 way street. I walk with the bike, until i reach the bike path.
-Where exactly can you lock your bike? Can you lock your bike on one of those green metal signs that tell you can park your car, or a bid red stop sign? What's the chances of getting your bike stolen, or getting your tires popped?
-Thanks.
Also, I have a gear bike, but I don't know how it EXACTLY works. Can someone explain,or post a link below? There is 1-3 on the left handle, and 1-9 on the right handle.

Answer
Yahoo simply won't allow me to place as many links here as I'd like to. But I'll cover as much as possible. You're riding a VEHICLE with the SAME rights, duties & responsibilities on the street as any car, truck, bus or motorcycle. Your PARENTS should teach you this. If they won't - I will. Answer
Where: try several local bike shops. Each store has its own vibe and you will quickly find out that some are for you, some aren't.

Avoid: department stores and online, especially if you are starting out. Bike shops provide service, variety, much better quality bikes, and information just not available at a department store or online.

Kind/type: think about where you would like to ride and be honest with yourself. Will you ride on pavement, are there hills and are they steep, paths, in the city, light dirt trails? This is exactly the kind of information the bike shop needs to help you.

Budget: good news/bad news - you are looking at least $300 and quite possibly more. This is a bargain in the end because of the included proper assembly, advice, and should include at least one free tune up.

Size: bikes come in different frame sizes, not one size fits all, not by wheels size. This helps them fit you properly. Having helped many people I can say the #1 criteria for choosing the bike for you is size and not the brand. One of the main differences in brands is the frame shape (geometry). Think of it like buying a pair of shoes: if it fits, ride it.

# of bikes to try: 3+. Why? Because they will all fit you a little differently. One should be clearly more fun to ride. This is usually your bike!

General types:
BMX: simple, single speed and rugged track racing

Track/single speed: like a race bike but with only one gear. Slow, simple, durable, but not for everybody. Not good on hills.

City/hybrid: flat/straight handle bars, medium width tires. Good for general purpose riding, especially when riding in a wide variety of places for short to medium distances of up to 15 miles.

European city bikes: great for very upright riding, have a chain guard, and are a great get on and ride option. These often have gears inside the rear wheel hub meaning less maintenance.

Comfort bikes: modern versions of European city bikes. Downside is it is more difficult to ride these 2 types up a hill since you are leaning less over the handlebars

Race: for racing and speed, not great for much else

Touring: similar to race bike, but designed for long distances, heavy loads, and more comfort. Great general purpose bike.

See the links below for ideas. The Breezer brand is really nice since these are Joe Breeze designed Fuji bikes, best of both worlds there. Clever Cycles is a store that specializes in European style city bikes. Check out their selection for an idea of what these are like.

Don't forget a helmet. It is really cheap insurance.

Best of luck and happy trails!
