Back pain while riding a bike?

Q. I've been riding a bike to lunch for the past two weeks, and noticed I've been feeling some pain in my lower back in the past few days. Do the bike and back pain seem related? And if they are is there something I could do to alleviate/reduce the effect of bike riding on my back?

Answer
The riding itself should not cause you a problem but it sounds like you don't ride too far for lunch so it's not likely that the bike has caused it but there are a few of ways that it could happen if you don't normally ride much.

1. If the bike is heavy and you lifted it up or over an obstacle you could have pulled or strained something.

2. You hit a pothole/bump hard, this might jar your spine.

3. Whilst straining to go up a steep hill - perhaps bending forward & pulling/twisting hard on the handlebars.

4. If are bending over too far- the bike is the wrong size for you perhaps?.

5. Carrying a heavy rucksack and bending forward puts a strain on your back.

6. You have a "near miss" fall/accident a freeze-reflex that people have when you have a moment of panic can pull a muscle.

7. You have sedentary lifestyle and you have not got used to riding regularly yet.

8 Bad posture when bending over to pump up a tire [I've done that one a few times!]

When you ride a lot, bad backs can become a problem but for short rides it is usually the fact that someone is unused to it or they have twisted that makes it hurt.

If none of the above possibilities ring a bell, keep riding gently [providing your back doesn't get worse]. If it improves you just needed to get used to riding, if not, or it worsens go and see a back specialists.

Your back is too important to miss-treat or neglect.

Ride a bike to lose weight?

College Li

Well I've been trying to get in shape for a while and nothing seems to work. So Im going to try bike riding. I'd be riding from my dorms to the downtown river front area everyday. By car that has to be at least a 15 minute drive, so I'll be getting a workout (I think). (Lots of hills and what not). My question is do you think thats a good plan? Im also cutting back on my food intake....or should I do a calorie counter I guess? What else do I need to know, Im new at this. All other info is helpful, thanks :)

I believe that riding a bike can help you lose weight. If you are at a plateau in your weight loss program, then you can ratchet it up a bit. Go up hills to create resistance. When you ride a bike with resistance, you burn more calories. You can keep doing this to create an endurance ride. Make sure to break yourself. Too much of a good thing is not a good thing!

Or you can ride in intervals. That means ride slowly for a few minutes, then ride as fast as you can for a few minutes. Repeat this process.

Either way you will burn lots of calories. Even if you just ride at a steady pace, any exercise is better than none. It sounds like you will be doing a little of both.

I am going to refer you to an article I wrote on spinning. Spinning principles can be applied to outside biking. Look below: Do not be alarmed but its title. It has some good tips that can be applied to outside cycling, too.

Eating less is always a good thing if you want to lose weight. You don't have to count the calories too much if you really do stop eating as much and ride your bike the way you probably will. However, if you find that you are still not making any progress, count the calories!
