I am help plan a July 2011 family reunion, comprising mainly of 20- and 30-somethings with children ranging from 8 yrs to 6 mos old. But we don't know in which area of the island to start searching for rental properties.

Forest beach area would be my suggestion, Closer to some good family restaurants:
Wild Wings Cafe - Wings/Burgers/Sandwiches
Amigos - good mexican
Not Far form Mellow Mushroom for Great Pizza
Close to Bike paths.
You may also want to check out Sea Pines area for a rental This is a gated community but very pretty. Bike paths Two chopping areas (south beach & Harbour Town)
Also one of the Mini golf. And Coligny Circle ( beach access & shopping area.

Anyone taken a family vacation to Hilton Head South Carolina?

My husband just decided to change our usual trip to Flordia to go to Hilton Head! We have a one year old, and a four year old. Would this be a good place to go with 2 small children? How is the beach? What else is there to do there?

Go to Kiawah Island. It's much prettier, the beach is extrememly wide with white sand, and it's close to both Charleston and Savannah. Kiawah is really beautiful (much more exotic than Hilton Head) and your kids will get to see alligators! There are all sorts of accommodations from condos to houses to hotel, great paths for biking, a small village, and just all around heaven. I've listed the site below.
