How much weight can I lose if I ride my bike 5 miles everyday for 30 miles straight? Will I get faster? Will I be able to be skinny by summer (lose 10 pounds)?
Is it hard to work up to riding a bike 5 miles straight? Also, is my Next mountain bike a good enough bike for this?

Once you can ride around the block, you can do a mile. Once you can do a mile wiht comfort, you can do five. It isn't a big deal. As you get in shape, your speed will increase dramatically. You will get sore, legs and butt! Both of these muscles will get workouts that you won't believe! But like all new exercise programs, the pain passes.
To maximize and speed up the effort, you will need to diet and ride to meet your goals, You burn about 35 calories for every mile that you ride. So increasing the milage Plus a diet will make a big difference too! The more distance the tighter the diet, the bigger and faster the results.
If you are riding the road, a simple change out of your mtn bike tires, for smoother and thinner road style tires will make a big difference in speed and comfort, at minimal cost.
You can hit your goal in very little time.... no problem.

what is better excerise riding a bike 5 miles or walking?

Robin
just woundering what is better work out
Answer
Depends on how flat it is (walking down a 2% slope is 'free' but walking is nearly the same as on the flat for example)... with steeper climbs cycling is slightly less efficient (because of the additional weight of the bike (if the bike is used and pushed, it is more efficient to stay on and ride).
For a flattish route, or a gently undulating one with minimal height changes and a return to the start, the cycling speed/effort determines whether cycling or walking is more effort.
At a slow speed (cycling with a walker or jogger for example) cycling is around 4-5 times *less* effort than walking, and running is about 40% more effort than walking...
At 'normal' cycling pace 20km/h or a bit faster, the effort for the same time as walking is similar, but the total effort is still less as you complete in around only 1/3rd the duration. - However you can cover more distance in the same time, or fit in the same journey in less time, which may make *some* exercise, rather than using a car or bus.
At 'fast' cyling pace (20miles/hr) cycling is slightly harder than walking for the same distance... it is this *intensity* rather than the actual speed though ~ so climbing a steep hill at a 'fast' 6 miles/hr is still good work. The higher speed permits much greater distances to be covered, and the higher intensity is better cardiovascular exercise, but still with a low-impact (so long as you use a low/light gearing and fast pedalling cadence).
The bike is far more practical if carrying heavy shopping for example ~ I can lift my own weight in four panniers plus a rack-top bag... but only about 1/2 of my weight in a rucksack, and with far less comfort. This added weight makes little difference on the flat, but *does* increase effort needed if climbing at all.
