Is riding a bike good cardio excercise?

I know that it's good for your cardio, but how good? (Please keep the answer related to the bike riding. I'm aware of other cardio exercises but I want to know more about the bike riding. Thanks!)

Yes it is one of the best. You have more control over your heart rate then most other exercises and have fun doing it. I can ride go hours at a time on rail trails and have fun doing it. With cycling shorts and jerseys you can stay pretty cool even in the middle of the summer. With gears you can control how easy or hard your work out is.

Stationary bikes are too boring to use for more then a hour but they help keep me in shape over the winter. The secret to cycling is to do an easy warm up for 10 min and then spin the pedals at 70-90 rpm's in a gear that is easy. You just want to work hard enough to get your breathing to the point where you can still talk but not sing. It doesn't hurt to ride hard for a while and then drop back to recover.

Most cyclists have a pretty low resting heart rate but it takes time to build up your heart.

How long should I ride my bike to make it a good cardio workout?

I am thinking of riding my bike around to get some cardio exercise because I absolutely hate running but do it ocasionally. I spar with pads on once a week with weighted gloves. I just need more cardio in my week to lose between 20-30lbs. I'm a 16 year old guy btw
