Look at the tires. A road bike will have narrower, high pressure tires in a 700c or 650c size. A mountain bike will have wider tires with a more aggressive tread usually in a 26" size. To confuse things a bit is the hybrid catagory. They have some of advantages of a mountain bike with the more upright riding position and less aggressive frame geometry as well of some advantages of a road bike with the larger rim daimeter and higher pressure tires.
