hybrid bike new york city image

Miguel
I live in New York City and I thought I should start working out over the next three months to drop some weight.
Also, if anyone has ever cycled here, where would be a good place to ride my bike? I thought of doing a full round at Central Park during the day, but with poor speculations, I'd say the full course is about 6 miles.
If you can give any answer related to my question, or any helpful tips/advice, that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
I realized size, and probably weight would probably affect decision on bikes, so;

There are at least twenty bike shops there. Visit a bunch, decide on which one has the most personable personell, test a few of their hybrids or tourers, you want one with fenders and lights as the NYC roads are covered in hipster and hobo vomit and the auto drivers are homicidal. There are some fast-ish riders who'll likely let you chase them. As for new bikes, I really like the Surly Ogre w/ 26" wheels as there are slicks you can buy for them (schwalbe kojak), it is intended to do hundred mile rides with either those, or whole days in the forests, it has heavy-duty rack mounts front and back so you can load it up with weight to make your shorter rides seem longer, or actually use it for grocery shopping/camping, and it comes with disc brakes which are amazing in traffic and bad weather.

Help me buy a new bike?

A!
Okay I'm thinking buying new bike. But not sure if I should buy hybrid or mountaine bike. I need bike to get from point Ato point B in city streets or off pavement road. I'm looking for bike with suspension of front or both front and back. Large wheels. A bike I can run over sidewalks , light flame. Something between road bike and mountaine bike. I like to ride my bike everday on Brooklyn bridge which you have to crime. And upstate new york off road pavement. My budget is from $700-$900.

I'd go with a mountain bike, instead of a fixie or a racing bike. When at a bike shop, ask for either a Hardtail or a 29er, for your purposes you won't need full suspension.
Since your budget is high enough, I'd recommend either a Specialized, Trek, or Giant brand bike. They're more reliable, ride smoother, and last longer than a Huffy or Mongoose branded bike you could get from wal-mart. I've had bikes from these makers, and they were all excellent. I also use a light mountain bike to get around town.
Another tip to save money would be to check your local craigslist for bikes from the above brands, or any others you research to be good. You can save money, and try out the bike on the spot. Some bike shops don't want you riding the bike around outside, but most sellers on craigslist are more flexible.
I'd recommend mtbr.com/reviews to read up on different bikes, and see which one is right for you.
