I've recently purchased an older Nishiki Olympic 12 (12 speed) road bike and I wanted to replace the chain. I was wondering, what would be the proper chain length or chain type for my bike?
Answer
You want a standard 3/32 inch multi speed chain, you want the same number of links as the old one. You will also need a chain breaker to cut it to the correct length and to remove the old one. You can get both at Walmart for cheap.

I recently purchased a road bike to replace my current $40 walmart bike. I generally ride flat paved surfaces. I don't want my theighs to continue to bulk up due to riding- will using a road bike possible help this? I'm looking to be lean- not real muscular. What would you suggest as the best bike workout to do this?
Answer
A higher cadence will help. But to be honest, I hear women ask this type of question all the time. Do you really think moderate bike riding for general exercise will bulk you up? I say no way. Noticable muscle bulk requires low reps and heavy resistance. Many women can't bulk up at all. And no toning is not muscle growth.
1. Look at pro road racers - they ride 10,000+ miles a year and train VERY hard. They are not bulked up. Some are darn skinny in the legs.
2. Women bulk up FAR less the men and take MUCH longer.
3. If a little exercise bulked that fast a bunch of us guys would be HUGE. But were not.
4. Cycling is foremost an endurance sport. Lungs, heart and legs. Endurance exercise produces lean bodies and lean muscles.
If your going to ride 3000+ miles this year, sprinting, mountain biking, riding in the Rockies. Yes, you will bulk up - a little. It should be the least of your worries.
If you have weight to lose your legs will get thinner. Actually building muscle is a long, and difficult process and doesn't happen by mistake.
I've weight trained, (and been a trainer) and cycled for many years so I'm not guessing about this. I wish my past clients bulked up in 6 months, I'd be a millionaire.
