My company has started a Bike4Work scheme which means I can get a bike for a reduced rate. I'm interested in the Boardman range (http://www.boardmanbikes.com/) and want to get a road bike (which I've had my heart set on) or a hybrid.

The bike will be used for improving my fitness down country lanes and commuting 12 miles each way per day. My fitness at the moment isn't very good, which of the two bikes should I get, road or hybrid.

The commute includes broken pavement cycle paths and roads.

For anyone in the South of England, it's actually from South Ockendon, Essex to Beckton, London

Answer
Go with a road bike they are more efficient and a lot better when ridding into a head wind. You will know where the road hazards are and use your mirror to see traffic before you get to them. The hybrid would work better if the bike paths were dirt or gravel. I would pay attention to what every one else is ridding.
