Sports bike for a male?

Ash

My boyfriends birthday is coming up and I want to get him a bike for riding along the Hudson river for a few hours. He's 5'10 and around 180 pounds. How tall should the bike be for him to ride comfortably? I know nothing about bikes so can I also get any suggestions of what kind to get or some particular style?

Answer
Very often the bike paths along a river are crushed stone, converted from barge towpaths or railroad beds. If this is the case, look into a hybrid bike. These paths are typically flat and smooth. He won't need knobby tires for traction or a suspension for bumps. Those things are unnecessary weight and complication.

The advice you got to go to a bike shop is spot-on. Don't go to a big box store or even a place like REI or DIck's. The people at the bike shop are trained to help your BF select the right bike and then fit it to him. That makes a HUGE difference in how much he'll enjoy the bike.

You're a good GF to buy him a bike!

i recently got my first mountain bike and i am planning to ride throughout the week and weekend for my exercise. but i dont know too much of where to go to ride. im near fort lee. if any of you out there knows good bike path please let me know- thank you!!

Answer
Yes, go up Route 9W, it is THE bicycle route for cyclists coming out of New York City, going all the way up to Bear Mountain sometimes.

The part of 9W that's in Fort Lee is called Lemoine, and it's a little crowded with cars and has no shoulder, but, trust me, once you get just a little bit further north, like up past Palisades Avenue in Englewood, it opens up and has a very wide shoulder and is a GREAT ride for miles and miles and miles! In fact, if you can start your ride at Palisades Ave. and go north from there, then that would avoid the congested part in Fort Lee altogether.

Or, if you'd like a more challenging, hillier ride, then, go over to River Road, just south of the GW Bridge about a half mile, to where the Henry Hudson Park road begins and enter the park drive there and ride north all the way up to Alpine, NJ, where the road emerges out on to Route 9W and you can either head back south to go home, or, if you're up for it, continue on north to NY State and beyond.

Good luck, and the link below is to a couple of useful maps of the area showing the ride starting points...
