Q. I am going on vacation at the end of June, and I was wondering if anyone knew if I am suppose to be riding a bike? At that time I will be 6 months pregnant.....
Answer
The actual ACT of riding a bike is safe during pregnancy and actually a really good workout for you.
However, the risks of falling are too high (even if you think you're an experienced cyclist) for it to be considered safe all around.
Just by hitting some loose gravel, or a pot hole, you could risk sliding out and doing some serious damage to yourself and your baby.
I wouldnt chance it. If you want to ride a bike, I would suggest getting an exercise bike to use at home. Otherwise, stick to nice walks on your vacation.
Good Luck and Have Fun~

Fit pregnancy?

K@t
I never exercise, but I would like to start because I need to loose 30 pounds. I am 5â8â and my weight was always oscillating between 135 and 145. Now I am 170 Lb.
I have been trying to conceive for the last few months, and I have a slight feeling that I might be pregnant now.
Can I start exercising regularly to lose those extra pounds? I mean like walking, working on the âGazelleâ (Tony Littleâs machine), lifting light weights to tone muscle.
I really need some help because I donât know what exercises I can do.
Thanks.
By the way, the main reason why I want to lose some weight is to have a healthy pregnancy and to don't get overweight later.
Answer
Agree with the advice to check with your doctor, but in general the answer is going to be yes. Don't start triathlon training and don't take up downhill skiing or rugby, but exercise is not a problem during a healthy pregnancy.
I would not focus on those 30 pounds. If you're pregnant, now is not the time to focus on losing pounds. Focus on eating right and getting healthier. It's not just the right number of calories, but the right foods for both you and the baby. Again, all the pregnancy books have info on nutrition and your doctor probably has pamphlets on this.
Exercise before and early in pregnancy will make the latter, 'big belly', stages much easier to handle. Plus, being in better physical condition will make recovering from the pregnancy and dealing with the sleepless weeks of caring for a newborn just a little easier to deal with. One caution, knowing nothing about the gazelle, is that many women experience balance problems even early in pregnancy. This is why some doctors recommend against bicycle riding and similar while pregnant.
