Answer
How much experience do you have on a road bike? If little to none, stay away from a fixed gear bike until you have more experience. I'm thinking this may be the case because usually someone with a lot of road bike experience wouldn't come here to ask complete strangers for advice. He/she would normally know in advance what they needed/wanted. No offense - just making a logical observation.

How do I work bike gears?

dodothealm

I'm somewhat confused about bike gears; I taught myself how to ride, and the second two following it had gears. At first I figured out the gears, somewhat; Once I got 'em comfortable, never changed it. This one has Five notches on the left, and 10 on the right. I know the lower the easier, the higher the harder. But this new bike I bought, it's either WAAAAY to easy, or ti's excessively hard. I grew up over-weight and now I'm in shape, so I have very strong legs, but if I put it on 4 or 5 (Sorry for sounding un-educated but to be blunt on this subject; I am) it gets very tiring. I used to go for 20 mile bike rides everyday and enjoy'd it, and I really miss it, but I just can't figure the gears out.

so I'm wondering if someone can explain them in detail, not just 'Lower easier; higher harder' then maybe I could find out if it's broken or not.

Would appreciate any help ~ Thanks.

Answer
do you ever look at the gears as you shift?

i'd be guessin' yout bought a road bike of sorts with a "triple" (3 chainrings) in the front and ten cogs (gears) in the rear.

the "five notches on the left" would include one for each chainring plus two trim "notches". notches 4 & 5 indicate your on the big chainring, the one that demands more power from your muscular legs. to keep from burning out your legs, drop down a "notch" to 3 which would put you on the center chainring. just spin your cranks faster to keep up speed.
