Are the Konza Prairie roads in Manhattan KS paved?

ScottyP

i want to ride my road bike through but don't know if the roads are paved

Answer
The public hiking trails at Konza Prairie are not paved. Also, please note no bikes or pets are allowed. Konza is a research park and most of it is dedicated to ongoing, long-term ecological research projects, so there are good reasons for these limits. The public trails are spectacular, offering great views of the Flint Hills and an up-close look at the tallgrass prairie. Backpacker Magazine selected the trails in its list of the top 100 day hikes in the country. There are three loops, so you can hike 2, 4, or 6 miles. I think you would enjoy a hike there.

If you are looking for a place to ride, I would suggest McDowell Creek Road, which goes south of Manhattan, past Konza. Continue south on this road and follow McDowell Creek valley up to the higher hills to the south. Or, try Carnahan Creek Road, which is north of Manhattan, just of Highway 13. It has more spectacular views of the Flint Hills.
