Thinking about it, here is one example:
You are riding a bicycle up a hill with a steady incline of n degrees. The hill is d feet long. Then, the verticle feet you have climbed is d * csc(n) feet.

Where are the most impressive bicycle facilities in the Netherlands?

greatinves
I am going on a bicycle tour of the Netherlands, starting in Amsterdam, and I want to see the best example of outstanding public investments in bicycle infrastructure. I know that it is a great place for cycling, but can anyone recommend a must see bicycle path, bridge, intersection or the like. I plan to ride about 400 km in 5 days, and want to make sure I get some good pictures of bike lanes.
Answer
The most impressive thing about the bike facilities in the Netherlands is that they are all over the country.
We even see Amsterdam as below standard, specially the city center.
Assen, Groningen, Houten, there are many cities with much better inner city facilities.
These blogs are about cycling in the Netherlands. You can use them for research or you can contact the writers to help you find the 'best' spots for you:
http://hembrow.blogspot.com/ specially the visit of the Australian group in May will give you a good start, you will find links to other blogs.
http://amsterdamize.com/ About cycling in Amsterdam
http://www.bakfiets-en-meer.nl/ Also about Amsterdam but this writer has done some recent tours in the country and describes them
And lastly a blog that is less of a promotion of the country and more what the writer experienced, but therefor maybe even better: http://cyclingwithoutahelmet.blogspot.com/
If you are going to cycle about 400 km in the Netherlands you can not miss cycle lanes, paths, bridges and such, there is no way around them.
But if you want to enjoy cycling you might want to follow one of the long distance bike routes, they mostly use low traffic and no traffic routes:
http://www.fietsplatform.nl/routes/ this site has a map with all of the them.
Or get familiar with the nodes network:
http://holland.cyclingaroundtheworld.nl/Wheretogo/WhereToGo-Cyclenetworks.html This page has some samples and a bit of explanation in English
This site explains three different networks for routes: http://hollandhiking.nl/index.php/bicycle-routes
And on this planner you can see the fine network of the node system, knooppuntennetwerk in Dutch: http://www.fietsersbond.net/fietsrouteplanner/fietsroutes-friesland/knooppunten/
