i'm trying to find a good bike shop in NYC to buy a new road bike. Any recommendation on a good shop here in the city??? Also any specific brand I should look for? My max spending is around $1000. I will be using the bike to ride to school about 7 miles each way. Also to ride with friends.
Answer
There is no one particular brand that is better or "best". The "best" bike for you - well...you have to take several out for extensive test rides & figure out which one just "feels" right & rides the best to you. Brands? Tons of 'em. Raleigh, Masi, Specialized, Cervelo, Trek, Giant, Cannondale, etc. The list goes on & on... All found at real bicycle shops. Tell the salesperson exactly what you need the bike to do for you. This time of year - start looking for close-out & over-stock sales as the 2012 models are coming out. A 2011 or 2010 model may be lower priced & just as good.

Seriously, the best at what? Or the best in what respect? How will you be using it? What's your weight? What about V02 or max watts? Doesn't cycling get silly?
Ride the bikes and decide for yourself. Other factors, such as dealer & service, may play a role, too. For instance, I might be interested in a Cervelo, but the only Cervelo dealership within 90 miles is staffed by buttmunchers. The company behind the bike might be important to you, since it's their investment in R&D and attitude toward customer service that help make a better overall experience. Take Trek for example; the Madone is a great design, and Trek is a great company behind the bike. But the base level Madone, the 4.5, rides like crap in my opinion. I'd much rather have a well made aluminum bike than a cheap carbon bike. The same goes for the Synapse 6. You just don't get the same ride with cheap carbon. I don't like Felt much, if for no other reason than they look ugly. That's enough reason for me. And Pinarellos are very overpriced at the lower end. Plus they come with the famous Italian 2yr "our bikes are perfect" warranty. No thanks.
Since your list wouldn't work for me, I'm not personally recommending any of them to you. But it's your money.
