how to choose bicycle?

Becky

I am a complete beginner. How should I choose the type of bicycle that suit me?

Answer
A) Read "Bicycles: How to Choose" on this link... http://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/bicycle.html

B) Ask yourself "Where & How" will I be riding? What do I NEED the bicycle to do for me?

C) And in all capital letters...GO TO A BICYCLE SHOP - or shops. A REAL Bicycle shop - not K-Mart, Target or Wally World.

D) Start TEST RIDING a few. It's free!!! The one you like the best & rides the best...buy it.

Purchasing my first bicycle?

Hi guys I'm going to buy a bicycle. I'm 5'7 and weight 185. I want a bike for communing to school it's about 5 miles from my home plus I also want it to take it biking in parks and trails. I think a mountain bike might do but want to be sure. I was thinking of buying this one. It cost 300 but I have a 100 dollar coupon if I spend 250 so it would only cost be 200. What do you guys think?

My budget is 200-300 is this too low for a decent bike. Please give me advice and suggestions thanks I also line in San Francisco if you know of local bike shops thanks

Answer
That is not a bicycle. That's a "bicycle shaped object". Combine a heavy steel fame with inferior components & suspension parts for city life & you have one miserable 5 mile journey. Besides...Sports Authority is NOT a bicycle shop. They're just a general sporting goods store, not much better than the dreaded Wally World when it comes to bicycles.

You want a list of bicycle shops in or near San Francisco? Here ya go... http://www.google.com/#gs_rn=19&gs_ri=psy-ab&cp=26&gs_id=1k&xhr=t&q=bicycle+shop+San+Francisco&es_nrs=true&pf=p&output=search&sclient=psy-ab&oq=bicycle+shop+San+Francisco&gs_l=&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_qf.&bvm=bv.48705608,d.aWM&fp=2ab7af2cf57bde5b&biw=1280&bih=878
Google even provides a map... https://maps.google.com/maps?q=bicycle+shop+san+francisco&fb=1&gl=us&hq=bicycle+shop&hnear=San+Francisco,+California&t=m&z=13

What you NEED is a bike designed for commuting & city life - not a mountain bike. You NEED a bike with 700c size tires, not w-I-d-e, knobby off-road tires. You NEED something like a Raleigh Cadent FT1 - or FT2 - http://www.raleighusa.com/landing/raleigh-cadent-ft2-wins-bicycling-magazine-editors-choice-award/

Add a rear rack & a trunk bag or panniers (saddle bags) and you have a good "commuter bike". My 2013 FT1...http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo267/OldHippie_01/2013%20Raleigh%20Cadent%20FT1/100_0364.jpg

It doesn't have to be a Raleigh - all the major brands make hybrids or "fitness bikes". But forget S/A. Go see a few REAL bicycle shops. The ONLY sporting goods store that has a GOOD bike shop dept. is R.E.I. - http://www.rei.com/stores/san-francisco.html Speaking of which - read this article from them..."Bicycles: How to Choose" - http://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/bicycle.html Mountain bikes SUCK as a commuter bike.
