Q. I'm planning to get my first road bike. I'm a girl who's about 5 feet 3 inches tall. Which road bike size would be the best for me? I also don't know much about road bikes. Any advice or things that I should know about them? Thanks!
Answer
Advice? Try BEFORE you BUY. A good bike shop will let you take one (or several) out for an extensive test ride. On-line sizing charts are for general guidelines only. They can vary from one company to another. Example: On the link below - it calls for about a 49cm or 50cm frame size. The 'stand-over' height of one bike might be different than another bike (from a different company) in the same frame size. There is no set standard. Confusing? You bet.
You should be able to comfortably stand over the bike (flat footed) with one to two inches of clearance. Don't jump at the first one that looks good. Go to several bike shops & try as many as possible. The one that feels the best - IS the best.
Stay far away from discount & big box store bikes. Terrible.

They are asking way too much for that bike. It's old school with shifters on the down tube. Spend another $100 and get a brand new bike with sti shifters.
