Road Bike Clipless Pedals?

bikeman

I am in the market for some clipless pedals for my road bike, a Trek 2 series. I have found a pair of shoes, they are the three hole type, but I can't find out what kind of pedals I need. Do I need cleats and pedals, or just pedals and what type?

Thanks

Answer
When you buy pedals the first set of cleats is included. To make use of the shoes you found, you need to buy a pedal that uses the 3 bolt pattern. The most popular brand is Look. Be careful with Shimano. They make two systems: SPD and SPD-SL. Only the SPD-SL is compatible with your shoes. There are lots of other brands as well that will use a "Look KEO compatible" cleat. Those will also work with your shoes. The older Look system was called "Look Delta."

Cleats do need to be replaced from time to time. Do this at the start of each season to be safe. Some other companies make cleats that are compatible with Look cleats, but I've had best results from the authentic brand. I've never used the Shimano SPD-SL shoes, but friends of mine have and like them. I've heard that the cleats last longer than Look.

Look cleats come in different colors. Each color indicates a different amount of "float" which is how much you can rotate the shoe toward or away from the bike while it is still clipped into the pedal. Black is zero, Gray is 4.5 degrees, and Red is 9 degrees. Start with red. It's helpful to be able to change your position slightly from time to time to increase comfort.

Is it harder to pedal a mountain bike then road bike?

Q.

Answer
No.
However, if you compare the two on the same road surface, you will easily go faster on the road bike. The mountain bike is likely to be heavier, have knobby tires (higher rolling resistance) and a less aerodynamic rider position. These things will necessitate a lower gear choice on the mountain bike than the road bike. It won't be any harder to pedal, but the average speed will be lower than the road bike.
