Better hit Craigslists in Austin . Maybe a Hybrid or comfort bike, or a 1980's road bike.

What would be the best bike for a beginner?

Moved to Austin a few months ago. Last time I rode a bike was when I was a kid. Looking to start up again. Hoping for some suggestions on what I should consider. Looking for something that would handle well on both roads and trails. Considering Austin seems to have a good mixture of both.
If you live in Austin it would be helpful, if not any bit would help.

If you want to best of both worlds a hybrid . But what type of money you want to spend 260-400 dollars then go for a bike in a HTO , REI , Sports Authority that's a lower grade but okay or Ebay or something online . But if you need to spend 400-800 dollars a local bike shop or a lower mid-tier Giant , Trek, Cannondale or a mid- tier Diamondback , Columbia or Schwinn in at least what the type stores I named . Target , Toy's R Us ,Walmart , K-Mart or any type stores these bikes are usually lower tier bikes .
