Google 'bicycle shop' and your zip code. That brings up every shop around you. Check with these shops about joining a local cycle club. They may even have maps of popular routes. Bike St. Louis does in St. Louis. Nearly every bike shop around has maps in stock for free designating "Bike St. Louis" streets.

Best routes for a Virginia Beach bicyclist?

I recently moved to Virginia Beach and would like to use my bike as a primary mode of transportation to save gas, get excercise, enjoy the weather, etc. I'm discouraged because the roads don't seem to be laid out with non-car transportation in mind, and no road seems to go directly anywhere. Does anybody have suggestions about safe streets to ride on? I live in College Park. Thanks!!

We live in Kempsville and I've been here for close to 30 years (scary).
Theres really not any where totally biker friendly.
Most people that are training for a bike race use the back roads in Pungo. Go down Indian river all the way to the end and turn right.
There are some bike paths closer to the beach front. Theres also some feeder lanes on Laskin that are a bit safer than riding right on the road.
There are several local bike groups that would know more details but I havent looked into them.
