The standard 3/32 inch chain will work don't get a 8, 9, or 10 speed chain. Those chains are narrower on the outside and wont work. Walmart has a chain that will work.

I'm thinking about building a road bike and i plan on focusing on a 8-speed build. I was able to find the 8-speed integrated shifters, 8-speed derailleurs, and 8-speed cassette. The problem is people don't sell 8-speed cranksets anymore, so I was wondering if a 9-speed crankset would work and if so would I need a 9-speed crankset + 9-speed chain or 9-speed crankset + 8-speed chain? Thank you very much.

Yes, a 9-sp crank will work fine. Your chain needs to match your cassette: 8-sp cassette means 8-sp chain, too.
The problems really occur when you're trying to run a narrow 10-sp chain on 8- or 9-sp cranks.
